Enhancing Efficiency at the Port of Cape Town

We are thrilled to share with you the launch of the latest port performance dashboard at the Port of Cape Town. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), this dashboard is set to revolutionize operational efficiency and enhance the port’s competitiveness. In this blog post, we will delve into the details of this groundbreaking development and explore its potential impact on the region’s growth and prosperity. 

We are proud to have played a significant role in the creation and implementation of a cutting-edge data intelligence dashboard, powered by our Logistics Monitoring System (LMS), for the Port of Cape Town. Through our partnership with South Africa Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF), we have successfully brought this project to fruition. The LMS represents a paradigm shift in how we approach port logistics and operations, providing near real-time insights and data-driven solutions to improve efficiency and sustainability. 

Let’s take a closer look at this remarkable project: 

Mireille Wenger, the Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, joined officials from DEDAT, Transnet National Ports Authority, Transnet Port Terminals, and other key stakeholders in the port logistics value chain to unveil the new online data dashboard. This innovative tool offers real-time data on marine, waterside, and landside operations, poised to shape the future of operations at the Port of Cape Town. 

The platform allows stakeholders to monitor key indicators, including: 

  • Behavior Beyond Port, such as average minutes in zone by departure day, hour, usage, and statistics. 
  • Port Productivity, encompassing Container Moves Per Hour (CMPH) and CMPH targets, CMPH per vessel, CMPH per crane adjusted, CMPH by vessel & call size grouping, and more. 
  • Container Moves, providing insights into moves across the Quay, general stack percentages, TEU moves by week, and average days at berth.
  • Stack – Land Side Operations, offering data on stack occupancy types, trucks, rail, and stack types, and stack stats versus demonstrated capacity. 
  • Port Movement History, including container vessel average days at anchorage and berth, anchorage and berth time by vessel type and terminal, and CTCT visits by week and vessel size. 
  • Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) Activity, with insights into congestion, median minutes at key locations, and container terminal activity. 
  • Live Vessel Activity, providing vessel counts, container vessels at anchorage and berthed at CTCT, and counts of vessels at inner and outer anchorage. 
  • Weather Impact, detailing conditions in and around the port and their influence on port operations. 
  • Traffic Incidents, offering incident types, counts, and their impact on TEU moves. 

This comprehensive and holistic view of the port enables stakeholders to identify and evaluate infrastructure development needs, stimulating trade and exports. The ultimate outcome is accelerated economic growth for the Western Cape, leading to the creation of numerous job opportunities. 

Key features of this tool include planning optimization, trend identification, indication of port production, and improved throughput with reduced delays. Primary port users have been granted access to the dashboard and are encouraged to provide feedback for further refinement. Minister Wenger emphasizes that the ultimate objective is to achieve end-to-end visibility of cargo in the logistics chains, facilitating an additional R6 billion in exports, creating 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, and potentially contributing 0.7% to the Western Cape GDP by 2026. 

By harnessing the power of this innovative tool, we have the potential to transform the future of port logistics. We eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have on economic growth, job creation, and the prosperity of the Western Cape.
